If you’ve been keeping up, PneumaWord started her first 2017 Bible Reading Challenge – The Major Prophets in 30 days (#PneumaWordMP30) seven days ago, with a focus on finding references to JESUS in the Bible books referred to as the Major Prophets (Isaiah to Daniel).
If you’re following our schedule, you should have read Isaiah 1 – 42 by today (see, it’s easy to read a chunk of the Bible when you set a goal and break them down into bits you can easily tackle 🙂 ). If you’re bummed that you missed out on the start, you can always join in and later, catch up on what you missed out on. I’ll repost the calendar right at the end.
Here are the Scripture references I have found so far that point to Jesus:
Isaiah 2:12-17
This reference talks about a day of judgement where essentially the guilty would be punished and various sins with their corresponding punishments are outlined. Jesus the Judge is revealed to me by the above portion of Scripture, as the verse below clarifies:
“Because He has fixed a day in which He will judge the world in righteousness through a Man whom He has appointed, having furnished proof to all men by raising Him from the dead.”
Acts 17:31 NASB
Isaiah 7:14b
This reference describes the nature of the human instrument to be used in the birth of Jesus, as well as His willingness to be in our midst, as Jesus Himself said:
“And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” Matthew 28:20b NIV
Isaiah 9:6-7
This reference describes (1) the nature of the Kingdom Jesus establishes – the kind of King He is:
A Wonderful Counsellor – whose counsel can be trusted; Mighty God – you need not fear because He cannot be overthrown; Everlasting Father – ever there so you need not worry because He’s seen it all; and Prince of Peace – ensuring His subjects enjoy peace by all means!
(2) His government: continually experiences increase and peace where judgement is rightly administered and justice served! Do you want to experience these now? Meet Jesus!
Isaiah 11:1-10
This reference describes what the baptism of the seven-fold Holy Spirit would accomplish upon the person and character of Jesus e.g. delight in obeying God; administering justice to the poor etc, and again, His kingdom e.g. justice for the poor, punishment of the wicked etc.
Isaiah 22:22
I wasn’t sure at first if this referred to Jesus or not, until i read a book or an article (can’t remember) where the following Scripture was quoted:
“Write this letter to the angel of the church in Philadelphia. This is the message from the one who is holy and true, the one who has the key of David. What he opens, no one can close; and what he closes, no one can open.” Revelation 3:7 NLT
Isaiah 40:9-11
This reference reveals Jesus’ reign yet again and His attitude towards His people. It’s message is reinforced by the following scripture:
“Look, I am coming soon, bringing my reward with me to repay all people according to their deeds.” Revelation 22:12 NLT
Isaiah 42:1-4
This reference to me is very similar to the message in Isaiah 11:1-10, listing out the benefits of the Kingdom where Jesus rules, primarily, justice for all!
You do not have to wait for the time when Jesus physically establishes His kingdom on the earth (Revelation 20:4-6) before you begin to enjoy the benefits of His rulership; you can enjoy them the moment you invite Jesus to takeover your life and allow Him rule as King! It would not be easy loosing control because you’re used to being in the driver’s seat. However, His grace would be help you as you yield (2 Corinthians 12:9) and you’ll begin to experience what living eternally is all about- to know God and the person of Jesus (John 17:3)!
